It's hard. Rubber band is comfortable and the price is right. I'm still using it after many months and is still in perfect shape. The elastic is tight enough to keep water out and keep the lid in place while the cap is large enough to hold my hair (which is about 6 inches past my shold and medium thickness), with free space. The cap is made of a very good quality, heavy material and I think that will last a long time.
